Owning vs Renting an Electric Scooter

Why buying an electric scooter is a much better option than renting

We believe the future will be electric. In our daily lives, we’ve seen the popularity of electric scooters rapidly increase over the past few months and we expect these scooters to one of Canada’s fastest-growing trends in the year 2020 and onwards.

Along with this meteoric rise in popularity, we’ve also seen scooter rental companies launching or starting to launch in Canada. So the obvious question becomes… is it better for me to rent a scooter? Or should I just buy one?

Here at TekTrendy, we believe that buying is not only better financially, but also has tons of other amazing benefits you might not have even thought of! Read below to find out more.

It’s actually cheaper to buy a scooter than rent one.

One of the most important considerations in every buying decision is cost. We also know that buying an electric scooter requires an upfront cost but… you’ll be surprised on how quick the payback is when you actually compare it to the cost of renting. We like to think of getting an electric scooter as an investment for the future!

To prove our point, we actually ran some numbers, comparing the cost of buying our scooters versus the cost of renting from one of the major scooter rental companies in Canada. We found that an average scooter user would be able to pay back their investment in just over 6 months!

That means if you plan on using your scooter more than half a year (we have a hidden feeling you will after trying it out ;)), its actually better financially to buy a scooter for yourself! But wait, there’s more…

Owning your own scooter adds convenience and makes it hassle-free to use!

One of the biggest advantages of electric scooters is being able to use it when you want it and where you want to use it. If you decide to use to go for a rental, you’ll have to spend time looking for a rental, playing around with their apps and maps trying to locate and unlock one. Maybe the one you got doesn’t work as it should, or the app has some problems and won’t let you unlock, then you have to repeat the process all over again…

Plus, Wim Ouboter, an electric scooter pioneer, famously say that in the US, a rented electric scooter has an average lifespan of 28 days, mainly due to vandalism and people leaving rented scooters virtually anywhere when they’re done using them. This has caused a lot of pushback against electric scooter rentals and we expect much tougher requirements in the future, like designated places that you must return your scooter to.

So, why deal with all that hassle and inconvenience that comes with renting an electric scooter? Electric scooters are all about simplifying your life and making it easy for you to get from Point A to Point B. Having your own scooter means you’ll know that it’s fully charged and ready to go, whenever you want to use it!

It also means you’ll be comfortable with your scooter versus having to adapt to a new one.

From speaking to our customers, we’ve also found that each person has their own preferences in what they want in an e-scooter. By buying your own, you’ll be sure that when you go out on the road, your scooter will be fit to your liking, it’ll be well maintained and you can feel safe on a scooter you’ve used before.

Most importantly, you’ll know all the features of the scooter, the braking system and how the acceleration works, so you can be sure you’ll have a comfortable time getting to where you want to go!

Finally, they allow you to make a statement about yourself!

Believe it or not, electric scooters are also very customizable! From adding accessories like a phone holder or a carry-on bag to including your own mirrors or changing up your scooter settings, your electric scooter should be something that represents you (we have an amazing selection in our accessories store!)

We believe every person is unique and has a story to tell, and having your own electric scooter allows you to customize the scooter to your liking and not just be another electric scooter rider in the crowd.

While renting might seem like a good option, as we showed above, it’s much better to buy one scooter for yourself. We’re sure once you get one, you’ll absolutely love it! :)
